🏢 General Questions

What is Blue Heron Lane Consulting and what do you do?

+

Blue Heron Lane Consulting Ltd. is Uganda's leading professional coaching and organisational development consultancy. Founded in 2009 and based in Kololo, Kampala, we help individuals and organisations achieve lasting transformation through executive coaching, leadership development, communication skills training, mentoring programmes, and team effectiveness work.

We have served 850+ professionals and 120+ organisations across Uganda and East Africa over 17 years of operation.

Are you a Ugandan company?

+

Yes, absolutely. Blue Heron Lane Consulting Ltd. is registered in Uganda (Registration No. 80020040118) and has been operating from our Kololo, Kampala office since 2009. Our founder, Dr. Grace Namukasa, is Ugandan, and the majority of our coaching team are Ugandan professionals with deep roots in the country's business and social landscape.

We are proud members of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) and are an approved training provider under NSSF Uganda.

What sectors do you work in?

+

We work across virtually all sectors in Uganda, including banking and financial services, telecommunications, NGOs and international development, government and public sector, healthcare, education, energy and infrastructure, and private enterprises of all sizes. Our approach is designed to be context-sensitive — we adapt our methodology to the specific realities of each sector.

Do you work outside Kampala?

+

Yes. While our main office is in Kololo, Kampala, we have delivered programmes in Gulu, Mbarara, Jinja, Mbale, Fort Portal, and across Uganda's Northern, Eastern, and Western regions. We also offer virtual coaching and blended learning programmes that serve clients regardless of location, including professionals in Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

🎯 About Coaching

What exactly is executive coaching?

+

Executive coaching is a structured, one-to-one professional relationship between a trained coach and a client — typically a senior professional or leader. Unlike training (which delivers knowledge) or consulting (which provides expert advice), coaching works by asking powerful questions, challenging assumptions, and creating space for the client to discover their own solutions.

The best coaching helps clients develop greater self-awareness, clarify their goals, remove internal and external barriers to performance, and build the capabilities they need to lead more effectively.

How is coaching different from therapy or mentoring?

+

Coaching vs. therapy: Therapy focuses on healing psychological wounds from the past. Coaching is future-focused — it starts from the assumption that the client is healthy and capable, and works to maximise their performance and potential. We do not provide therapy.

Coaching vs. mentoring: A mentor shares their own experience and wisdom; a coach draws out the client's own wisdom. Coaches don't necessarily need to have worked in your industry. Both are valuable — we offer both services, and they often work best in combination.

Are your coaches qualified?

+

Yes. All Blue Heron Lane coaches hold professional accreditation from the International Coaching Federation (ICF) — the global gold standard for coaching credentials. Our senior coaches hold ICF Professional Certified Coach (PCC) or Master Certified Coach (MCC) credentials. In addition, our team holds qualifications in psychology, organisational development, and human resources from universities in Uganda, the UK, and South Africa.

We are also a certified partner of the Uganda Management Institute (UMI) and our programmes carry UMI-recognised professional credit.

Is our coaching relationship confidential?

+

Absolutely. All coaching conversations are strictly confidential and governed by the ICF Code of Ethics. We do not share the content of coaching sessions with employers, sponsors, or anyone else without your explicit written consent.

When organisations sponsor employees for coaching, we report only on broad progress and agreed milestones — never on the content of coaching discussions. We discuss this boundary explicitly in your first session and in our engagement agreement.

📚 Our Programmes

How long does an executive coaching programme last?

+

Our individual coaching engagements typically run for 6 to 12 months, with sessions every two weeks. Research consistently shows that meaningful, lasting change requires sustained engagement over time — quick, one-off sessions rarely produce durable results.

We also offer shorter focused engagements (3–6 sessions) for clients with specific, bounded goals — for example, preparing for a major presentation, navigating a career transition, or managing a difficult team situation.

What happens in the first coaching session?

+

The first session is a discovery and goal-setting conversation. We explore: Where are you now? Where do you want to get to? What's getting in the way? We also discuss how you work best, what coaching style suits you, and any concerns or questions you have about the process.

Before the first session, you'll typically complete a short self-reflection questionnaire and, for longer programmes, a psychometric assessment (such as the Hogan Personality Assessment).

Do you offer group or cohort programmes?

+

Yes. Our group programmes include: Women in Leadership Cohort (annual, 9 months), Young Professionals Accelerator (for under-35s), Leadership Academy for senior managers, and custom cohort programmes for organisations developing multiple leaders simultaneously. Group programmes combine group workshops with individual coaching and peer mentoring circles.

Do you offer virtual or online coaching?

+

Yes. We have offered virtual coaching since 2018 and significantly expanded our digital delivery during COVID-19. Virtual sessions are conducted via a secure video platform. We find that virtual coaching is equally effective for most clients and removes the logistical barriers of travel within Kampala's traffic.

Our blended learning programmes combine virtual sessions with in-person workshops and retreats to get the best of both modalities.

💰 Cost & Payment

How much does coaching cost?

+

Our individual coaching packages start from UGX 2.4 million for a 6-session introductory programme. Our comprehensive 12-month executive coaching programme is UGX 8.5 million. Corporate and group programmes are priced based on scope — contact us for a tailored proposal.

All prices include: sessions, assessments, resource materials, and email support between sessions. There are no hidden fees.

Can my employer pay for coaching?

+

Yes, and many of our clients are sponsored by their employers. We regularly work with HR departments and line managers to structure employer-sponsored coaching arrangements. We can issue invoices to organisations directly and provide the reporting structures that HR and finance departments require.

If you're considering approaching your employer about sponsoring coaching, we're happy to provide materials that help you make the case.

Do you offer payment plans?

+

Yes. For individual clients, we offer payment in two or three instalments for our longer programmes. We want the investment to feel manageable — not stressful. Let us know your circumstances when you enquire and we will find a structure that works.

Is there a free consultation before I commit?

+

Absolutely. We offer a complimentary 30-minute discovery call with one of our senior consultants before any commitment is made. This call helps both of us assess fit — we want to make sure we're the right partner for you as much as you're evaluating us. Book your free call here.

📍 Logistics & Delivery

Where are your sessions held?

+

Our primary coaching rooms are at Plot 8 Acacia Avenue, Kololo, Kampala — a comfortable, private, and easily accessible location. We also offer sessions at your office premises across Kampala, or at a neutral venue of your choosing.

For virtual clients, sessions are conducted via secure video call. For retreats, we partner with venues across Uganda including the Nile River, Jinja; Lake Bunyonyi, Kabale; and selected lodges in Murchison Falls National Park.

How quickly can we start?

+

We typically onboard new individual clients within 2 weeks of agreement. For corporate programmes requiring full curriculum design, allow 4–6 weeks for a comprehensive co-design process. We always aim to match the urgency of your situation — if you have a pressing need, let us know and we'll do our best to accelerate the timeline.

What if I need to reschedule a session?

+

We understand that life and work are unpredictable. We ask for at least 48 hours' notice to reschedule without charge. Sessions cancelled within 24 hours may be subject to a 50% charge. We are human beings, not machines — if something urgent arises, let us know and we will always try to find a solution.

🏢 For Organisations

Can you design a custom programme for our organisation?

+

Yes — and that's our preferred way of working. We don't deliver off-the-shelf programmes. Every corporate engagement starts with a thorough diagnostic phase: conversations with stakeholders, review of your strategy and culture, and assessment of the specific capability gaps you face. The programme is then co-designed with you to address your exact needs.

How do you measure the impact of corporate programmes?

+

We use a multi-level measurement framework based on the Kirkpatrick Model: participant reaction (satisfaction), learning (skills and knowledge gained), behavioural change (applied back on the job), and business results (measurable organisational impact). We conduct baseline assessments before programmes begin and post-programme evaluations at 3, 6, and 12 months. We provide full impact reports to corporate sponsors.

How large are your training groups?

+

For workshop-based programmes, we recommend groups of 12–20 participants for optimal learning. For facilitated team sessions, 6–12 works best. For large-group events (conferences, leadership summits), we have delivered to audiences of up to 300. Our training facilities in Kololo accommodate up to 60 participants. We also come to your premises.

Do you work with government and public sector organisations?

+

Yes, and this is an area of significant strength for us. We have delivered leadership development programmes for multiple government ministries, statutory bodies, and local government units. We understand the unique challenges of leading in the public sector — political accountability, resource constraints, bureaucratic structures — and design our programmes accordingly. We are also experienced in navigating government procurement processes.
